Build your career in pathology & laboratory medicine

At Nova Scotia Health, medical laboratory assistants (MLAs) and medical laboratory technologists (MLTs) play a crucial role in diagnosing and monitoring patients' health conditions through the analysis of blood, tissue, and other bodily fluids. MLAs assist in specimen collection, preparation, and processing, ensuring efficient workflow, while MLTs perform complex laboratory tests such as blood tests, cultures, and biopsies to identify diseases, infections, and abnormalities.

Additionally, these professionals contribute to research and innovation in medical diagnostics, advancing the fields of pathology and laboratory medicine and improving patient care outcomes within our province’s health centre environments and communities.

Work closely with physicians and other healthcare providers to interpret test results, guide treatment decisions, dispense life-saving transfusion products and monitor patient response to therapy.

Take your expertise where it's truly valued. Enjoy the benefits of a coastal lifestyle in Nova Scotia and seize endless career growth opportunities. Our Recruitment Team is dedicated to supporting your transition and ensuring your success.

Pathway to work in Canada

If you have been trained and working as a medical laboratory technologist (MLT) in another country, you will need to follow the Prior Learning Process (PLA) with the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS). This process is performed by CSMLS on behalf of eight Canadian provincial MLT regulators and provides a single point of access for internationally educated medical laboratory technologists (IEMLT) who are seeking Canadian certification.

How to Become Certified

MLT Bridging Program

Michener's Medical Laboratory Science Bridging Program helps prepare internationally educated MLTs and domestic MLTs for the CSMLS national licensing examination in Canada. In this intensive and comprehensive 16-week course along with 8-week placement, participants will gain valuable simulated laboratory experience, intensive theory review, and thorough preparation to write the CSMLS certification exam. The simulated laboratory courses will assist participants in obtaining Canadian work experience.
