About the Opportunity
The Clinical Therapist is a member of the Virtual Crisis Assessment Team Service team in Mental Health and Addictions. Reporting to the Manager, the Clinical Therapist provides assessment, planning & connection to local services. The Clinical Therapist carries out the general duties of the Virtual Crisis Assessment Team but in addition to those duties, participates in quality initiatives in the program of care, engages in collaborative person-centred care, and utilizes available information technology to support best practice. The Clinical Therapist receives and provides supervision and mentorship as part of a community of practice. It is an expectation that the Clinical Therapist will act in a professional and ethical manner, following all recognized codes of ethics, standards, legislation, and guidelines relevant to clinical practice and profession. They will convey respect and a solid understanding of subtle and complex diversity and inclusion issues as they relate to specific groups.
This position will be providing virtual (via phone/zoom) mental health crisis assessment support to Northern zone emergency departments. This is a work from home opportunity and applicants can reside in any location throughout Nova Scotia. This position will also support the police consultation line with CIT trained police officers to improve collaboration, coordination and communication between and among MHA and policing agencies. Shift schedules will be coordinated on a quarterly basis with hours of operation between 3-10 pm (Monday-Friday) 9am – 10pm Saturday – Sunday & Holidays.
About You
We would love to hear from you if you have the following:
- Master’s Degree in a clinical health-related discipline (Masters in Social Work, Psychology, Masters in Counseling, Masters in Nursing, or Masters in Occupational Therapy)
- Current registration with relevant provincial regulatory body or eligible
- Minimum two (2) years' licensed related experience required including assessment and planning, treatment and intervention, and discharge planning
- In-depth and critical understanding of the principles of harm reduction, the dynamics of addiction, and evidence-based interventions for the treatment of addiction
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of standard criteria used (DSM-5) for the classification and diagnosis of mental health disorders
- Demonstrated knowledge and skills in individual/ group cognitive behavioral therapy as well as psycho-educational groups
- Demonstrated knowledge and skills in crisis intervention, suicide, and violence risk assessment/ intervention
- Demonstrated ability to take initiative, work independently with limited supervision and participate as a member of a multidisciplinary team
- Basic competencies in relation to identifying and treating concurrent mental health and substance use disorders
- Experience in interviewing, counseling, and teaching health concepts to individuals, families, and groups
- Demonstrated knowledge and skills in collaborating with families in relation to sharing information, and implementing family-sensitive services that involve families in the care and recovery of people living with mental illness and addiction
- Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred
Minimum two (2) years of licensed clinical experience required. If not available, candidates with less than two (2) years of licensed experience may be considered for the selection process. If offered employment, they will be placed on the Clinical Therapist (Developmental) scale.

Compensation and Benefits
Clinical Therapist
$42.21 - $58.30 hourly
Clinical Therapist (Developmental)
$37.64 - $49.94 hourly
