About the Opportunity

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) provides comprehensive and coordinated care to patients as a member of an inter-professional/collaborative opioid recovery and addiction day treatment teams. The NP improves the capacity of the opioid recovery program and coordinates outflow to primary care. The NP adheres to the NSCN Standards for Nursing Practice and the Code of Ethics and is responsible and accountable at all times for his/her own proactive consistent with relevant legislation, professional and ethical standards. The NP is accountable to identify, analyze and evaluate activities that are reflective of quality improvement initiatives. The NP partners with and complements other members of the mental health and addictions team across the continuum of care for the achievement of person and family centered care which includes assessment, diagnosis, treatment, monitoring and evaluation of patient health and treatment outcomes, screening and health promotion, early detection of illness and disease, chronic disease management, continuity and coordination of care and enhanced access to progress, services and community resources. NP practice activities include brief intervention community outreach, individual and family support, health promotion, disease prevention and education, crisis-management along with linkages to other community-based supports and programs, primary and reproductive health care, medical management and prescription renewal and referral to specialty services such as infectious disease and pain specialists. The incumbent will be the key liaison with primary care physicians, psychiatric staff, including all mental health and addictions staff, and other community partners and agencies such as correctional facility health centres, to ensure seamless care and is ideal for an NP with a passion for working with individuals who experience concurrent disorders. The NP utilizes an integrative/multidimensional approach that is biopsychosocial, person and family-centered, and culturally sensitive.

About You

• Completion of a Masters of Nursing – Advanced Nursing Practice stream or equivalent nurse practitioner program
• Current registration (or eligibility) as a Nurse Practitioner with the Nova Scotia College of Nurses (NSCN)
• Minimum of two years recent (within last 5 years) NP experience in a Mental Health and Addictions setting
• Current certification in Basic Life Support
• Successful Completion of controlled drugs and substances (CDS) education program and registration with the Nova Scotia Prescription Monitoring Program (NSPMP).
• Completion of Opioid Dependency Treatment Core Course via Centre for Addiction and Mental Health
• Experience, knowledge and respect in the application of harm reduction and determinants of health theory and practice approaches to client care and engagement in promoting health & supporting recovery
• Demonstrated critical thinking and problem solving skills and the ability to integrate and evaluate pertinent data (from multiple sources) effectively utilizing DSM 5 to screen and assess for mental health and addictions/concurrent disorders and conduct crisis and suicide risk assessments consistent with service standards
• Prescribe controlled drugs including but not limited to agonist medication for the treatment of opioid use disorder according to Nurse Practitioners’ Authorized Practices: Nova Scotia Schedule of Prescribing Pharmaceuticals and relevant legislation, standards and policies.
• Excellent interpersonal and written, electronic (Microsoft Office Programs, including Outlook) and verbal communication skills, and a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, public, community partners, primary care team members and other professionals and agencies
• Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred

Hours

• Permanent, Full-Time; 75 hours bi-weekly

Compensation and Benefits

$59.47 - $69.52 hourly

($71.96 hourly with 25 years' NP experience)
