About the Opportunity

Reporting to the Microbiology Manager and working collaboratively with the Chief of Service, management team, medical and laboratory staff, the Microbiology Technical Specialist performs procedures offered by the division using appropriate methodologies and quality assurance techniques. The Technical Specialist must demonstrate technical expertise in bacteriology competencies and general microbiology competencies. The Technical Specialist should have a good understanding of workflow in both the preanalytical, bacteriology  and media sections. The Technical Specialist should have a solid technical understanding of microbiology lab automation, instrumentation-based identification and susceptibility testing, emerging rapid testing solutions, media preparation and quality control. The Technical Specialist has the capability to conduct all aspects of procedural and instrument troubleshooting, method evaluation, establishment and maintenance of quality assurance and safety programs, as well as interpret the technical acceptability of method results.

 

In addition, the Technical Specialist must be able to understand and manage complex workflows including but not limited to data entry into laboratory information systems, integration of new testing methodologies and oversight of multiple middleware solutions on clinical instruments. The Technical Specialist will be responsible for inventory management, training of new staff and students and document control. The Technical Specialist will collaborate with the management team to support and maintain daily operations as well as activities related to accreditation. The Technical Specialist will be a resource for other laboratories in Central Zone. The Technical Specialist will collaborate with faculty, colleagues, vendors and clients in Central Zone and throughout Nova Scotia Health.

    • Must be a graduate from an approved program in Medical Laboratory Technology OR Graduate with a BSc in Medical Laboratory Science
    • Certification from CSMLS and licensed with NSCMLT is required
    • Minimum three (3) years’ experience in a Microbiology Laboratory required
    • Familiarity with Preanalytical Microbiology
    • Experience with Microbiology Automation and ID/AST systems utilized in Bacteriology an asset
    • Experience with Media preparation and QC an asset
    • Experience with Rapid Molecular Diagnostic systems an asset
    • Experience with Laboratory Information System, preferably Cerner Millennium, document control systems, and other related computer skills an asset
    • Knowledge of appropriate laboratory accreditation, legislation, regulations, standards and guidelines 
    • Strong project and time management skills
    • Must have demonstrated strong interpersonal and leadership skills; excellent organization and technical skills; as well as good decision-making skills
    • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally
    • Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred

Hours

  • Temporary Long Assignment/ 100% FTE / 75 Hours Bi-weekly 
  • 18 month term

Compensation and Benefits

$38.91 - $48.42 hourly
